There is a big hill near Lyons, Colorado called Rabbit Mountain. (second mountain from the top.) When I finished this small oil painting, the mountain seemed a problem, but I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. It seemed to look like a big dark triangular blue-violet blob with nothing of interest to add to the rest of the picture. The color seemed to make it stand out, but not in a good way. I put it on my wall to let it sit.
After a couple of months of glancing at it now and then in the studio (still under my skin) I copied it into Photoshop and lightened up the main section of the mountain and made a few color changes. Relief at last! I changed it into a square format you see here, and am ready to paint it large.
Photoshop is one of my favorite tools in the toolbox. I use it to fix paintings and also to visualize new ones, and improve color and contrast mid-painting. Plus it saves paint and cleaning brushes!
