“There are moments in a person’s life when she knows life is changing forever. That moment came for me in the summer of 1972, when I back-packed through Europe as a history student with my friend Terry. I came home with a burning desire to become a painter. I always loved making art since I was a child, and that seed got its huge dose of watering during those 11 weeks of visiting all the art treasures of the continent.”

Karen paints imaginary cityscapes and other themes inspired by her life and travels. “My focus is color and design. Once I departed from realism, it was as if someone gave me permission to express myself in paint and color in the way most natural to me. Free-form drawing helped me discover how my imagination works. I have saved all my sketchbooks over the years. The pages remind me of how my creative mind works, and inspire me to go on with color and paint to bring an idea to canvas.

Karen’s paintings may be seen at Osmosis Gallery in Niwot, CO. Or visit her Etsy shop at http://www.etsy.com/shop/shimmertown.

Karen lives with her family in Boulder County, Colorado.
