Creating Your Own Extraordinary Life

“When one man, for whatever reason, has the opportunity to lead an extraordinary life, he has no right to keep it to himself.”
-Jacques Cousteau
If artists can figure out early in life that they are not “mainstream people”, it would be a good thing. We often even do get jobs, we get educations, and raise families. Yet we know we are somehow “different.”
Permission to be Different
Artists are musicians or painters or illustrators in my family. Our parents accepted our chosen professions and encouraged us. That was a very important thing in our lives, that acceptance thing, but it should never deter other artists out there in our world to keep making their art if they don’t have a family support system. Many do not have this, so that is an obstacle a person can accept and overcome.
The main thing is this, we all have something unique to contribute, as artists. No matter how small or large, seemingly unimportant or magnificent. The thing we make is unique. No one on earth ever made this before and that alone makes it something to consider, think about, and make another one. What we make is extraordinary, it is something to be shared! We learn from sharing this thing we make, and then maybe we are inspired to go on, maybe even battered from what critics might say, no matter, we go on, and make more!

When I was a young freelance illustrator working often into the night, I loved having Jacques Cousteau’s Undersea World to keep me company on tv into the night. I was captivated and loved all the images of that world Cousteau opened up for me to see. I am not a person to go deep sea diving, I just  love to know there is that magical world out there under the sea and I have seen it often thanks to tv and internet. These paintings are inspired by many earlier works from some years ago.
I love these words from Jacques Cousteau.
“If we were logical, the future would be bleak indeed. But we are more than logical. We are human beings, and we have faith, and we have hope, and we can work.”
Jacques Yves Cousteau
