Saying goodbye to dear friends on the day job… A painter moves on.

My commute to my day job as a graphic designer for McCall’s Quilting in Golden, CO will soon be over. I smiled when I took this photo just outside Boulder, about 30 minutes left to go to get to work. Quilters are amazing people, and have a wonderful bond and love of their craft. I’m so glad I got to learn this and meet the best of the best in our industry, lovely and talented ladies, and some gents too. I love you all, dear friends, at McCalls Quilting Magazine!

I determined early on in my 20’s that I wanted to make a living as a graphic designer/illustrator to meet my ultimate goal to create paintings in fine arts for a living. My freelance career took off early on. I made a living with illustration and design in publishing. I kept painting “on the side”, as they say, yet my painting work is never “on the side.” It is on my forefront. It is what my real work is about. And my love of design encompasses all my creative work. My work at McCalls Quilting Magazine gave me some opportunities to design. For that I am happy and thankful. Now, studio, here I come!

If a painter needs a day job to pay the bills, decisions must be made. I don’t know if this is a topic for discussion in art schools these days, so I will just say, try to do what you love in any form if you need a day job to support your painting or art career. I know there are many people out there who paint or make art when they can, and make sacrifices to find the time. If you are it that bunch, please share!
