July Wild: Expressionist Play on Independence Day

July Wild, 8 x 10″ mixed media and digital printmaking

There are no fireworks in our county today, with the ban in place because of the danger of more wildfires. It’s hot outside, a perfect day to stay home in the studio and make my own fireworks. Expressionist process means painting with exaggeration of the usual elements of art. For me: show greater contrast and bolder lines. Scribble spontaneously with the pastels and then blend. Transform the original watercolor painting with a shift from the softer look to one more charged with emotion and drama. I love this free way of working today!

Like the holiday which reminds us of personal freedom and taking on challenges, artists can celebrate their own Independence Day no matter where they live. Working expressionistically is one way to give this a go!
