Painting a garden for the first day of Spring

Spring Garden 2012, by Karen Gillis Taylor, watercolor and acrylic on 140 lb. arches, 8 x 10″

When you find an unexpected flower blooming in the garden it’s a sweet surprise, like a gift. Spring is here in two days, and this painting is about that feeling of surprise, a little bit of joy discovered when nature is at work.

This painting seemed to grow too, almost by itself, as I painted along. It started out with watercolors on a cold pressed watercolor block, and then acrylics were called for when a darker, dense paint was required to achieve a bolder effect and greater contrast. The roughness of the paper was perfect for a certain amount of texture I was happy to see.

Painting is better than gardening for me, when the growing season is still a long way off!
