Snow Day! Can’t paint snow without a tube of blue paint…

Vail Morning, oil on board, 12 x 16″, KG Taylor

When a big winter storm hits our state it means studio time! People are divided on their love or hate for snow, and I’m one who appreciates it. Winter can be beautiful.

Taking the bus is a good way to get around in snow, don’t you think?

Grab your camera if you want to paint snow in the western US. It disappears quickly in New Mexico and Colorado.

No need to forego color when painting winter scenes. Ski towns are especially colorful places these days. People living in winter climates find ways of wearing every color they can dream up. Maybe it makes white and gray skies more bearable?

Villagers in the Snow, mixed media, 22 x 24″, Leon Gaspard

Leon Gaspard is a favorite painter I discovered in Santa Fe galleries. He was a Russian painter, trained in France and settled in Taos around 1918. He painted snow scenes wonderfully, better than anyone I think I’ve seen. You may want to look him up!
